Simon Keegan (7th Dan)
Simon is the head of KBI-World for England, based in Manchester and is the chief instructor of the Shobukan Karate Organisation, succeeding his late mentor Shihan Philip Handyside.
Mr Handyside trained and graded under Budokan grandmaster Chew Choo Soot and was the first vice chairman of KBI in England in 1979. Simon has trained in this style and related styles for more than 30 years, on top of previous study. He is a third-generation martial artist.
As well as grading to 7th Dan in his core style, Simon was awarded Dan grades in Shotokan Karate and Nihon Jujutsu by one of Japan’s oldest martial arts organisations, the Kokusai Budoin, and trained under some of the senior Japanese masters in the world. He has also been recognised by the Dai Nippon Butokukai in Kyoto and the Rengokai in Okinawa. Simon has also studied Chinese internal martial arts for more than 25 years including Yang style Tai Chi (Taijiquan) and Chinese sword forms. He recently hosted a Chinese White Crane grandmaster at his Dojo. He has also studied various Okinawan styles of Karate.

Simon is the author of five books including “Karate Jutsu: History and Evolution of the Okinawan Martial Art” for which Japanese master Fumio Demura wrote the foreword, and he worked with the Japanese Honorary Consul, Japanese Embassy and Team GB on Tokyo Olympic preparations. He teaches Karate at Marksman Martial Arts, Ashton-under-Lyne, Manchester and his senior student Phil Jennings (4th Dan) run a Shobukan Dojo in Chorlton, Manchester. There are also associate clubs in Wigan, Greater Manchester. Simon’s approach to Karate is centred around practical close quarter Bunkai.
